Renovation Details for “Cho-ie” Under Consideration
Kamanza-cho “Cho-ie” Renovation Project, 2nd Meeting
On Saturday, May 8 at 8:00 pm, the second meeting of the Kamanza-cho Machiya Project was held at “Cho-ie.” First, members of the “Kyomachiya Architects” presented an in-depth explanation of the revised construction plan. Renovation proposals this time focused on 1) those groups planning to use “Cho-ie,” 2) factors essential to elevate the building’s perceived value as a functioning “machiya,” and 3) requirements for fulfilling its function as a base and model for future machiya renovation projects in accordance with endowments received from the World Monuments Fund (WMF). Further study will be necessary to determine how best to minimize constructions costs while realizing the above points.
Plans for a formal visit to the “Onoya” family gravesite prior to beginning renovations and ideas for the offical “yago” (house name) of the renovated “Cho-ie” machiya were also discussed.
At our next meeting on May 23 (Sun) at 7:00 pm, project details will be examined more concretely in order to move forward with preparations for renovation work.
“Rakumachi Rakuya” to Begin 5/15 ~ 6/13
Every year for one month, from mid-March to mid-June, “Rakumachi Rakuya” sponsors a variety of events including concerts and exhibits held at machiya throughout Kyoto City. Last year at the Kamanza-cho “Choe-ie” townhouse, Maiko gave a koto recital and talk. Kamanza-cho’s Mr. Kishimoto and Mr.Hasegawa also conducted a machiya talk session.
This year, an open house viewing and talk session is scheduled for “Cho-ie” prior to the commencement of renovation work. An exhibition of the Kamanza-cho “Cho-ie” Renovation Project Competition by Space Design College (SDC) is also scheduled. Both events are free to the public, so please stop by.
