 Design and Construction Contracts for “Cho-ie” Renovation Completed Kamanza-cho “Cho-ie” Renovation Project, 4th Meeting The Project Team’s fourth meeting was held at Kamanza-cho “Cho-ie” on May 30 (Sun) at 7:00 pm. At this meeting a design and construction contract for the “Cho-ie” restoration project was finalized. The contract between Design Chief Ryoichi Kinoshita of Atelier Ryo (Kyomachiya Architects) and Construction Foreman Shohei Oshita of Oshita Komuten Ltd. was signed by both parties with Kyomachiya Restoration Secretary Yasuhiro Uchida acting as witness. Prior to the start of reconstruction, a formal announcement at the “Onoya” family grave is planned for June 5 (Sat) at 11:00 am with members of Kyomachiya Architects also in attendance. Afterwards, a brief “Kakari Hajime” ceremony will take place at “Cho-ie” to officially mark the commencement of reconstruction work. The ceremony will be followed by a traditional procession to inform neighbors that the reconstruction is about to begin. The reconstruction period has been set to last from June 1 to the end of October, slightly longer than usual for such a project in order to accommodate a series of field trips and briefing sessions scheduled to take place during different stages of the renovation. An Open House at “Cho-ie” is also scheduled from June 1~3 (Tue ~ Thu) between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm so that visitors can view the condition of the machiya prior to the start of restoration work and hear an explanation of the renovation plans.
